At The Driftwood Spars Brewery, we are lucky enough to call Trevaunance Cove our home. Our brewery sits just meters from the Atlantic, and the sound of the waves is the soundtrack to our brew days. But being this close to the ocean means we also see its vulnerabilities firsthand.
Whether it’s our Head Brewer going for a coastal cycle or our owner, Louise, heading out for her daily sea swim, we witness the reality of marine litter every day. That’s why we decided that our beer should do more than just taste good—it should do some good, too.
The Mission: Protecting Our "Backyard"
We are incredibly proud of our ongoing partnership with Fathoms Free, a volunteer-led charity dedicated to recovering "ghost gear" from the Cornish coastline.
"Ghost gear"—abandoned fishing nets, pots, and lines—is a silent killer. It entangles seals and dolphins, destroys reefs, and poses a serious hazard to local vessels, including the RNLI. Because much of this debris is hidden beneath the surface, it often goes unnoticed until it’s too late.
How Your Pint Makes a Difference
When we launched our Cove Range of contemporary craft beers, we pledged to donate a percentage of every sale directly to Fathoms Free.
Thanks to your support, these donations have already made a tangible impact:
Specialist Equipment: Funds have helped purchase a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), allowing the team to scout the seabed and plan safer, more efficient recovery dives.
Direct Action: Our contributions have funded dives right here in Trevaunance Cove to remove dangerous abandoned gear reported by local swimmers.
Expansion: To date, we have raised over £5,500 for the cause, helping Fathoms Free scale up their operations across the Cornish peninsula.
Meet the Cove Range
Each beer in the Cove Range features stunning artwork by Jago Silver and carries the Fathoms Free logo as a reminder of the mission. From the tropical notes of Dune Hazy Pale Ale to the deep, rich flavors of the Midnight Skinny Dipper Milk Stout, there’s a brew for every palate.
Looking Ahead
While we know we can’t solve the world’s plastic crisis overnight, we believe in the power of local action. By choosing a beer from the Cove Range, you aren't just supporting a small independent brewery; you’re helping to ensure that our Cornish waters remain clean, safe, and beautiful for generations to come.
Next time you crack open a can, take a moment to enjoy the view—and know that you’re helping us protect it.
Cheers to cleaner seas!
